The Cycling Salamander is a fine art gallery outside the city of Charlevoix, Michigan.  Charlevoix is located on three lakes - Lake Michigan, Round Lake and Lake Charlevoix  in the northern lower (peninsula) of Michigan. We feature works from over 30 selected Michigan artists.   Come enjoy quality work in our casual Up- North setting and stroll our 3-acre sculpture walk among northern Michigan wildflowers and our annual cutting  garden.

exciting week-long art/sailing excursions in Lake Huron's North Channel.   Experienced instructors and skipper combined with stunning scenery make for a fabulous get-away close to home. Join nature photographer and editor of Whisper in the Woods online magazine for this one-of-a kind. workshop which will allow you to expand your technical knowledge and inspire your creativity in this north woods setting.  You'll enjoy the casual teaching approach and immediate feedback.  

North Channel shorelines, rock and boreal forest, wind and water, wildlife galore will be our subjects for the week.  On cool mornings we'll explore at sunrise.  In evenings we'll walk the shoreline composing dramatic landscapes and turn our cameras west to capture spectacular sunsets. We take our excursions at a leisurely pace so there is time to relax and enjoy our beautiful surroundings.

Prerequisites/requirements: Participants need to have a film or digital SLR camera and a beginning understanding of its operation. Please bring your camera manual, a tripod and any other equipment that is relevant. Also, bring plenty of digital space and laptop if you re set up.   

Nature in the North Channel

Captain Bill will be guiding Steve and four participants to some of his favorite places in the North Channel including the Benjamin and Fox Islands. The course will include morning instruction and objectives followed by evening critique of images. Students will have plenty of time to explore this fabulous landscape. 

Required Equipment: Digital SLR equipment with tripod.

Steve Gettle’s images communicate his love for the wildlife and wild places of our world and have been exhibited in galleries and museums all over the world, including the Museum of Natural History in London and The American Museum of Natural History in New York. In the spring of 2008, Steve was honored to have a one man show at The National Center for Nature Photography in Ohio. His work has been featured in many books, magazines, calendars, and other publications by, The National Geographic Society, Canadian Geographic, Audubon, Sierra Club, The BBC, The World Wildlife Fund, The National Wildlife Federation, Birder’s World, Nature’s Best, Wild Bird, and Natural History. His other honors include being chosen Great Lakes Wildlife Photographer of the Year as well as being a multiple award winner in the BBC’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

   
   Intuitive Watercolor Painting

Sail away to beautiful Canadian waterways and capture their essence with intuitive watercolor instructions by veteran teacher, Betty Bea Washburn.

Intuitive watercolor teaches seductive and flowing strokes which allow the water and paint 
to mingle and form trees, grass, waterways, etc. Pouring natural light glazes onto the paper results in a glowing, atmospheric watercolor.

Skipper, Bill Penistan will be sailing the class to his favorite islands and inlets around Manitoulin Island (only accessible by boat) giving students the opportunity to paint some of the most spectacular sites in the Great Lakes including the famous Benjamin Islands. This area provided inspiration for the famous "Group of Seven Painters" of Canada. Participants will sleep and eat on the boat with trips to shore for painting and sightseeing. .

Free time will be available for hiking, reading, photography, painting and sailing from one pristine venue to another.

Betty Bea will provide a supply list to participants upon registration.
